What Is Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer is a condition in which cancerous cells form in the skin’s tissues. It’s a condition that can occur in people of all ages and races. As many as 20 percent of people develop skin cancer at some point. Fortunately, it is a very treatable condition when it’s caught and addressed early.

How Do I Know If I Have Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer isn’t something that can be diagnosed at home. However, it’s important that you keep an eye out for any changes in your skin. This includes changes on any part of the body, including but not limited to your scalp, ears, between your toes, genitals, hands, and feet. While any changes are important to discuss with your dermatologist, some things to keep an eye out for are changes in freckles and moles and any new growths or skin spots.

Your dermatologist will ask about any changes at each visit. If you notice any changes between your regular appointments, it’s important to schedule an earlier one.

During your visit, Dr. Sandhu or Dr. Pham at Sand Dermatology will check your skin and any issues you point out. If the spot seems suspicious, they’ll perform a biopsy so that the lab can determine if cancer is present or likely.

What Treatments Are Available for Skin Cancer in Orange and Chino Hills, CA?

Treatment for skin cancer depends on several factors, including the size of the cancerous tissue and in which layer of skin it’s present. When it is in a small area and only on the surface, a simple biopsy can typically take care of the issue. When it is spread wider and in lower layers of the skin, a biopsy can still be used, but it’ll likely be combined with one of the following:

  • Cryotherapy, which freezes cancerous cells
  • Chemotherapy utilizes medication to kill the cells
  • Radiation therapy
  • Surgery to remove the tumor
  • Photodynamic therapy, utilizes medication and fluorescent light to destroy any precancerous cells without impacting normal cells

When you visit Sand Dermatology, Dr. Sandhu or Dr. Pham will discuss the best treatment options with you after your examination and biopsy.
