Signs of Skin Cancer

The sun feels great on your skin. Unfortunately, the ultraviolet rays from the sun are also doing damage to your skin. Excessive, unprotected sun exposure is the leading cause of skin cancer, a disfiguring, and sometimes deadly skin disease. Dr. Aman Sandhu and Dr. Diem Pham at Sand Dermatology provide comprehensive dermatology services, including diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer. They have two convenient office locations in Chino Hills, and Orange, CA, to help you.

What You Need to Know About Skin Cancer

To help prevent skin cancer, you should do a regular self-check of your skin. You need to know what to look for. These are some of the signs of skin cancer:

  • Moles that are poorly defined, with ragged borders
  • Moles that have an asymmetrical shape
  • Moles that have a diameter of 6 millimeters or more
  • Moles that have grown back after previous removal
  • Moles that itch, ooze, or bleed
  • Red, scaly patches of skin that hurt or bleed

If you notice any of these signs of skin cancer, you need to visit your dermatologist for a skin cancer screening. Your dermatologist will perform a complete skin check. If your dermatologist detects suspicious areas, your dermatologist may recommend removing a small section of tissue. The tissue may be biopsied to determine whether the tissue is benign, precancerous, or cancerous.

Throughout your life, it’s important to do all you can to protect yourself from skin cancer. That means:

  • Avoiding tanning booths
  • Using an SPF of at least 30 every day
  • Using an SPF of at least 50 if you are outside for long periods
  • Avoiding direct sunlight between 10 AM to 2 PM
  • Wearing a hat and sunglasses
