Skin Cancer: Who Is at Risk?

How your dermatologists in Chino Hills, and Orange, CA, can help you prevent skin cancer

If you spend a great deal of time out in the sun, you are at risk of developing skin cancer. If you go outside without wearing sunscreen, you are at even greater risk of skin cancer. Your dermatologist is an expert at prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of skin cancer, and can help you.

Dr. Aman Sandhu and Dr. Diem Pham at Sand Dermatology provide a wide range of medical and cosmetic dermatology services, including prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of skin cancer. They have two office locations in Chino Hills, CA, and the new location opening soon in Orange, CA.

Excessive sun exposure can damage skin cells, leading to skin cancer. There are a few other factors that put you at greater risk of skin cancer, including:

  • Light skin and freckles
  • A past history of skin cancer
  • A family history of skin cancer

There are some signs and symptoms of skin cancer to watch out for, including if you have:

  • Large moles, with diameters of 6 millimeters or greater
  • Irregular moles, with uneven, ragged borders
  • Recurring moles that have grown back after previous removal
  • Itchy, burning, or bleeding moles
  • Scaly patches of red, irritated skin that don’t go away

If you notice any of the signs or symptoms listed above, you need to schedule a skin exam from your dermatologist. Your dermatologist may recommend removing a mole or tissue sample for a biopsy, to determine whether there are precancerous of cancerous cells present.

You can help prevent skin cancer if you remember to:

  • Avoid using tanning booths
  • Use an SPF of at least 15 every day
  • Use an SPF of at least 30 if you are outside for long periods
  • Stay out of direct sunlight between 10 AM to 4 PM, when UV rays are strongest
  • Wear clothing that protects your skin, and a hat and sunglasses
